5 Things Every Non-MMO-Gamer Should Know

Do you ever get annoyed at a Non- MMO-Gamer friend or spouse who just doesn’t understand MMO’s? We are here to give them, our beloveds, a quick run down of the “need to know” facts about MMO’s so that they can be on the same page as you…

Huh?

1. MMO ADDICTION

Yes some people get addicted to MMO’s. No one is denying that, but for the love of all that is good don’t accuse us of being addicted when we play less than 3 hours a day or don’t want to go out for some reason. If we weren’t playing an MMO we would just be zoning out watching the T.V. If there is a problem then the game isn’t the problem, its the person. All we ask is that you wait before you start saying those words. Especially when you spend more time watching TV and reading magazines than we do playing.

2. “Why can’t you just log off right now?”

MMO games take a lot of time and commitment because they are played with real people in real time. So when you ask us to log off, please give us at least 5 to 10 minutes. Why? Well most likely your MMO playing friend is in a group. It often takes time to organize a group, get together, get to the place you want to fight, and fight your way in. So to be respectful to those people you want to give them fair warning before you up and leave and waste their time. If you really want to help us out, and you want us some where, let us know an hour before. This way we can hold off on grouping, or help our group find a replacement for the job we were doing. Imagine your on a road trip to Las Vegas with a group of friends, and you split the cost 6 ways, then one person leaves mid-trip with out notice and every one else is left with the bill. It’s kind of like that. We are just trying to be respectful of the people we are playing with.

3. MMORPG’s Are for Nerds and 11 year oldsatb_mocking_article1[1]

As true as that is, its also for every one else. Other than WoW most games have a majority of older more mature players. Also there are many women in those games as well. The number of women if MMO’s has jumped in the past 2 years. While the pictures you see of MMO fans are the poorly dressed Convention fans, not all of us are like that. We live normal lives, we play sports, we go out with friends… This is one reason voice chat has become so popular. Its nice to hear the people you play with and really get to know them.

4.  MMO’s Are Time Wasters

Again, only partly true. In our article “5 Things I learned from Playing MMO’s” You can see that there a multitude of benefits from playing these games. Compare them to any entertainment medium and I could easily argue that they teach the player more. You learn, you make friends, and you get some good R&R in the meantime.

5. They are Called Massively Multiplayer Games for a Reasontargetvw2

One thing that most people don’t know about MMO’s is how many people are playing these games at once. In most MMO’s there are at any given moment hundreds or sometimes thousands of people playing in the same “world” all at once. Passing by each other, fight along side one another, and trading money and items with each other. There are also big fights called raids where dozens of people come together to fight one big boss monster. In some games there are even large scale battles. Such as in Warhammer were once in a while you will get 200 vs 200 battles. Each player controlled by a real person, live, online.

Please, share this with your MMO-tarded friends so that they may know enough to live happily along side you, and maybe even join in the fun.
