My Dream MMO

Every gamer does it. Once you start getting sick of your current MMO your mind starts to wonder off to the dream world. “What if this, and what if that.” Then you’re off searching for new MMO. Here are my MMO dreams…

Daydreaming...LoL!

Daydreaming...LoL!

Before I start sharing my MMO dreams, let me give you a quick background of my MMO gaming history. So you can see where I am at. My dream will be different than that of some one who perhaps just picked up an MMO recently.

I started playing MMO’s back when EQ was big. I didn’t play but I used to watch my friend play for hours at a time. Soon after I got into MMO’s and have been playing since. The last game I truly played was Warhammer. I played from super casual to hardcore scheduled raider, and from PVE to Open PvP.

Now, onto my dreams. As with many a MMO gamer I could design an MMO from the ground up I have given it so much pondering time but these listed here are my top dreams.

1. No More Games…Worlds!

I would like to see MMO’s to pull away from making games, with set progression tracks, repeat quests, and end game raids. I want to see full fledged worlds! The player isn’t playing a game but rather taking part in this MMO world. The world reacts to the player. It gets pushed, destroyed, built, moved, and depleted by the players mucking about in this fantasy game world. Some games have elements of this. EVE’s economy is one of the prized accomplishments of the MMO world and proves how cool this idea is. I know role players would go crazy in this kind of game world, but I think everyone of every play style could enjoy it.

2. Skill Based Combat

Fireball!

Fireball!

Have you ever played Oblivion? Than I am sure you thought of this the first 10 minutes of game play. No more passive combat. I want hit-boxes, I want blocking and swinging. I want a skilled player be able to kill 10 unskilled players easy. Even if its simple like the MO Rakion, from the makes of Gunbound, it would still be super fun.

3. Quests Not Jobs!

This is my number one pet peeve in MMORPG’s. Being high leveled player and killed 10 Fire Rats for a quest. I understand that all heroes started off simple but come on! Maybe at the lowest levels they can exist, but for a player on the high end I want to take part in epic adventures. Like obtaining your mythical or those long quest chains that end in some awesome armor piece. Things to really work towards and give you a sense of accomplishment.

4. Art Not Graphics

Look...Art!

Look...Art!

Both WoW and EQ2 came out at the same time. EQ2′s game engine could do more but was over all more bland than the lesser engine of WoW whose well designed world looked cohesive and interesting. I want to feel as if I am in the concept art. The concept art is always so amazing then in game its just so static and ugly. I want to be wrapped up in the zone. I want the colors to change my mood to danger when I’m about to face off with a dragon. Forget realistic, this is fantasy, I want the experience to be surreal!

5. Customer Support

What if a game provided you with excellent customer support? You petition and they answer with in 5 minutes. To me that would be a huge plus. If the game I was playing had good CS and another game came out from another company I don’t think I would switch. A lot of companies have been ruined or are being severely damaged by their poor CS. *cough* Sony *cough* I know so many players that will not play any game, no matter the quality of the game, from certain game companies because of their Customer Support is so irritating and bad.

6. More Voice Acting

Can you hear me? Sweet.

Can you hear me? Sweet.

This was a dream of mine before the whole “OMG OMG STAR WARS MMO” deal. I am so happy they are going to the extent they are with it, as it will prove my point. I love it. Mostly because I get tired of reading boring quest text and end up super lost and bored because I am missing the story of the zone. Its not that I don’t like to read, I love reading. I’m reading Mr. Einsteins Biography at the moment. Its just the small text about a quest I don’t care about doesn’t engage me so I skip it. With Voice the game world swallows you in and makes everything feel more alive and fun.

7. Integration With the Outside World

I hate how when I am playing an MMO it traps me in the game. At least a few of the games let you play in windowed mode. I want to see more integration with the outside world. Like twitter, or the games website. I want to see a game partnering with Curse.com to bring them together. I want to be able to talk with guildies when I am not in game. I think it would be cool if there were “Camera’s” I could peek into when I am not in game that is pointed at the main city square.

Those are my Dreams, I have many more. Perhaps I will do another article to add onto these. For now, I want to hear your MMO dreams. What do you want in future MMO’s?

    Good post.
  • Thank you, glad you like it. Anything you would add?
  • Hmm... Newbie-friendly community :)
I like it in a game when I can socialize with people, instead of having them laugh at my stats and lack of knowledge. Some games are too hard to get into because you feel that the community is too "elitist" (this is a problem with games that have difficult-to-master mechanics). Good communities usually form from having active GMs, so I guess that fits in with #5? I recently (as of two years ago) stopped playing 3D games when I realized that I could socialize more in browser-based strategy games. I guess the reason I like newbie-friendly communities is because I always have good memories from a player-mentor walking up to me and saying, "Hi. Do want help on your quest?"

I suppose that this is not an issue in games that have good storyline, because the storyline is just as good as a mentor. But free-to-play games tend to lack storyline :/
  • I agree a community can make or break a game. For example vanguard was a game that was bugged to hell but had the best community I have ever played in. I played it for a full year. Darkfall is the other side of the coin. Its self destructive, the people push ever one else away.

You cant really control who plays your game but there should be things to encourage a good community. I think more games need GM's like you said. That help people, solve disputes, and throw a GM event every now and again.
