Every year a new and exciting MMO will come out touted as the WOW (World of Warcraft) killer; and every year the game starts strong but then falls apart. I can’t make wild predictions like that, in fact, I don’t think anyone can. The MMO gamer is a highly loyal and fickle consumer, it is just too difficult to predict what will happen. But if there is one thing I have learned it’s that a good MMO gets played.

First I would like to cover the basic story and premise of Aion. The world is known as Atreia it is a world literally split in two. With an enormous rift between the two halves known as the Abyss. There are two playable races, the Asmodians and the Elyos. Asmodians resent the Elyos who have lived in light while they live in the dark and the Elyos people that are blessed with the light see the Asmodians as a people cursed by the god Aion. Once the two sides were joined until the Cataclysm which was caused by a power hungry and villainous race known as the Baluar. Aion is a totally open PvP sort of game meaning that this game is always PvP you will not be able to avoid it.

This game has a very simple class system there are four basic classes which can split out into a total of eight final classes. The four are Priest, Mage, Scout, and Warrior. The Priest splits into a Chanter and a Cleric. The Mage has Spiritmaster, and Sorcerer. The Scout gets Assassin and Ranger. And the Warrior can become either a Gladiator or a Templar. While the class system is fairly simplified and is the same for either race, it eliminates the the confusion that games which offer 20 races and even more classes provide. I find the actual class system very refreshing and promising. For those who find the choices for customization a little disappointing they will be surprised to find the level of customization in the character creation. With it you can make characters so bizarre and unusual that they are almost different races. I have seen characters that look like goblins and others that look like giants.

The game play is very intuitive and use both the click to move that those Asians love and the traditional WASD movement. My only complaint is the camera angles. I like to constantly adjust the angles and found it a bit cumbersome. But overall it was well done. The battle system is very smooth and the moves you learn can level up to become more powerful. So your battle style isn’t completely changed each time you learn a new move. The Introduction quests are very helpful and teach you everything about the games workings. Aion has really captured the traditional MMO feel but still added a few new twists that make it feel like a brand new kind of game.
